Painters and Decorators in Edinburgh: How to Compare Quotes for a High-QualityFinish

Two decorating quotes may look similar on paper while covering very different amounts of work. Here is how to compare them properly.

Start with a consistent brief

If you are requesting several quotes, give each decorator the same information. Explain the rooms and surfaces involved, any damaged areas, the desired finish and whether the property will be occupied during the work. Mention features such as cornicing, sash windows and intricate joinery. Without a shared brief, the cheapest figure may simply reflect a smaller scope rather than better value.

Look beyond the number at the bottom

A useful quotation should make it reasonably clear what is included: preparation, filling, priming where needed, paint application, woodwork, ceilings, protection and clean-up. Ask whether materials are included, which finishes are proposed and what would count as additional work. In older properties, some defects may only become apparent once work

begins, so agree how any variations would be discussed before proceeding.

Ask about preparation and craftsmanship

High-end decorating is often distinguished by the quality of edges, the consistency of finish and how existing features are treated. Ask how doors, skirting, decorative mouldings and previously painted surfaces will be prepared. It is also reasonable to request photographs of relevant completed work. A portfolio is most useful when it shows projects similar to yours, not simply a collection of attractive colors.

Consider the experience of living through the work

A reliable team should be able to explain access requirements, working hours, furniture protection and the order in which rooms will be completed. If you are renovating an occupied home, the practicalities matter almost as much as the finished photographs. Clear communication about drying time, room availability and changes to the programme helps avoid frustration.

Judge value over the life of the finish

A carefully prepared, appropriate coating can be better value than a rushed repaint that needs attention sooner than expected. For traditional properties, maintenance and compatible materials are especially important. Historic Environment Scotland advises owners to identify defects early and plan repairs before problems become expensive. A good quote should therefore reflect the condition of the property as well as the visible decorating work.

Frequently asked questions

Should I always choose the lowest quote?

  • Not without comparing preparation, materials, scope and communication. Ask for clarification where details differ.

Is a site visit important?

  • For multi-room work or period features, seeing the surfaces usually helps a decorator prepare a more accurate quotation.
